“It sounded absolutely ridiculous, but it was true. Chuck Pearson was the master of getting into all sorts of fucked-up situations and expecting his family to bail him out. He’d been to prison more times than he’d been to the dentist. He had more mug shots than I had yearbook photos. Gran said he wasn’t always like this, that he’d been a different person before my mom died, but I was still in diapers when that happened, so this was the only version of him that I knew.
