“His ten-year-old mind struggled to remember where he was and why he felt a growing sense of excitement. Then consciousness returned; he was in the orchard room of his uncle’s and aunt’s farmhouse. He, his parents and his six brothers and sisters–all of them, from baby Cyril to big brother Douglas–were halfway to Liverpool. They’d said goodbye to their old home in Worcester the day before and packed their belongings on to a horse-drawn cart. This was a place called Shawbury.
