“Maureen got off and climbed down the stairs, enjoying a bracing breath of cold air in the street. The street ran around the back of Brixton high street, sloping away from it at a forty-five-degree angle. The start of the Lane was busy with bistros and wine bars, small restaurants and tasteful clothes shops.
